When To Take The Long Way (& When Not To)

Our world promotes speed, multi-tasking, grinding it out and getting sh*t done. My life and yours are likely filled with deadlines, timelines, and – yes – just regular ole lines in stores, restaurants and more.

So, when on a road trip (like we are currently), always take the long way (with a nod to Supertramp). Without exception, long drives surrounded by epic scenery are worth it. I have had more inspired ideas and visions when behind the wheel of a car, driving through somewhere amazing than anyplace else (our inspiration to sell it all and move into a Sprinter van was received on a hike in Sedona).

Yesterday, we made the long trip from Boulder to Santa Fe (to see Meow Wolf – seen it yet?), and decided to take a more meandering route through the mountains (see pic, and yes I’ve lost my razor). Along the way, we generated some amazing ideas and visions for various projects we’re working on. These happen so naturally when in the presence of snow-capped mountains, vast valleys filled with horses and cattle, small brooks and streams carving the land. Somehow, while immersed in such a landscape, extraordinary visions can emerge.

For me, the more I can design my life so as to allow for these epic opportunities, the better. More and more, I am dropping old ways of living and being, so that today my life looks nothing like what it looked like a few years ago and is starkly different from the way most people live.

For most, life is a rush from one activity to the other. In these circumstances, grander more expansive visions for what life could be are tough to generate. And thus, people live the same way, day to day, month to month, year to year…for me, this is a tragedy.

In whatever way you can, create space – even if just a small amount – for epic dives into nature (or whatever inspires you). You will likely emerge refreshed, with a more nourished and exciting vision for what your life could be. In fact, I recommend to all my friends, clients…anyone who will listen, to do this regularly (1 day per month deep into nature minimum) so as to unplug from the matrix and receive a higher vision and call for what you can create going forward.

I’m always amazed at how nourishing and fruitful these times are…always. The power of nature reminds us of our infinite nature, and the fact that our lives are here for the creating (and not for the struggling only). Anything is possible, in other words, and nowis the time to remember that.
